The holidays are meant to be a time for families to gather, memories to be made, and laughter to be shared. If the holidays at your house include pets, don’t forget to look over these extra precautions to keep everyone happy and healthy this holiday season.
1) Tinsel
Many trees this Christmas season will be adorned with beautiful lights, ornaments, and other decorations. But, if you have a pet, you might want to think twice about whether tinsel should be on yours. If ingested by your pet, tinsel could end up causing a blockage in their intestines. This blockage would then require surgery for Fido. If you do choose to decorate with tinsel, please be sure to hang it out of your pets’ reach and to vacuum regularly for any pieces that might fall off.
2) Candles
This is an all-year-round tip to take into consideration. Whether it is their noses or their tails, pets have a way of knocking things over. Make sure that all candles, hot plates and wax warmers are out of their reach. This will help avoid burns, spills and property damage.
3) Holiday Plants
Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are all very common décor around the holidays. However, each of them are poisonous to cats and dogs if ingested. Be sure to keep them in a safe place away from your furry friends.
4) Live Christmas Trees
If your family opts to buy a live tree this year, be sure to keep an eye on the pine needles. Though they aren’t poisonous, they can cause all sorts of internal damage if ingested by a pet.
5) Toppling Trees
The lights, shiny objects and allure of your tree might just be more than your pet can handle. Be sure to set your tree up in a place that will have the least possibility for disaster. A corner, away from windows or other glass objects is ideal. However, if this location isn’t available, using a gated system around the tree will help to keep your pet at a safe distance.
Following these simple tips will help to ensure that your pet has a happy and healthy holiday season!
Merry Christmas from your friends at MFiber.
